Our Nutrition Philosophy

Healthy Food Matters

Complete pet care starts with nutrition, the foundation for good health. Most of today's pet foods are far from what nature designed dogs and cats to eat. Many of the ingredients in today's "best selling" and even "premium" foods have little or no nutritional value. These ingredients help reduce the shelf price (price per ounce), but end up wasted and ultimately, cost you more.

At CityVet, our recommendations for feeding your pet are based on the science of nutrition. With this foundation, we can help you understand your pet food choices. Choosing healthier foods result in your pet's improved health and quality of life. After all, "healthier" doesn't have to mean more expensive.

And healthy food is what we promote. CityVet's Nutrition Philosophy focuses on four basic principles:

  • Natural Only - Pets should be fed all-natural, meat-based foods that contain healthy ingredients. Avoid feeding grain based foods.

  • Moisture - CityVet recommends adding moisture by adding water because hydrating is healthy and it is nature's intent. You can add moisture by adding water to dry food, feeding some but not all canned food, and considering non-cooked raw options.

Too little moisture causes dehydration which can lead to urinary stones, kidney disease and bloat.

  • Variety - We encourage feeding a variety of healthy foods. Mixing and rotating may take time for a pet to adjust to, especially if their system has been trained to process a single source of food, but most pets adjust quickly and then begin to thrive. However, introduce the variety slowly if your pet is used to a single diet. Always speak to your vet for your pets dietary needs.

  • MYTH:
    Always feed the same food.
    TRUTH:
Variety is nature's way of ensuring a complete balanced diet.

  • Non-cooked/Non-processed Raw Foods - Dogs and cats by their very nature are designed to eat whole raw prey - meat, bones and organ tissues - not processed kibbled food. The non-cooked raw pet foods available today are the closest thing to nature we have to offer our pets. These foods are essentially the same as the foods they would eat in the wild.
